Researches discover ‘fats’ can treat Diabetes mellitus

A new study had revealed that fatty acids can help fighting against type 2 Diabetes. It is the most common lifestyle disease and according to WHO statistics of 2012, for every 10 persons, 1 person is diabetic.
Alan Saghatelian, Ph.D at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies with Barbara Kahn, M.D. conducted the research and found a new class of potentially therapeutic lipids, called fatty-acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs), found in people with insulin resistance. The study was conducted on diabetic mice. The FAHFAs when administered to these mice improved their glucose metabolism and insulin secretion which showed a way for the development of the novel medication for diabetes.
Researchers at the Beth Israel Medical Deaconess Center found that they could create obese mice that were unusually sensitive to insulin and suspected that the lipids found in them were behind it. The research done on these newly discovered fats could lead to a diabetes therapy.
To identify 16 types of FAHFAs in the mice, the researchers used Mass Spectroscopy technique. Then these lipids were injected to insulin resistant mice and observed it was observed that there had been an improvement in inflammation, insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake.
Also the researchers measured the FAHFA levels in the blood samples for human subjects and found lower levels of these compounds in those with insulin resistance.
Alan said that they would be able to come up with better therapies in mere future to treat the disease.
