Coffee reduces alcohol related liver cancer risk

A research was carried out by London scientists as part of a study carried out by the World Cancer Research Fund to know how coffee is related to liver cancer. Researchers analyzed 34 scientific studies with data compiled from eight million men and women with 24,600 cases of liver cancer. They found those who drank about three alcoholic drinks a day benefited from regular coffee consumption to the point of diminishing liver damage and ultimately lowering their risk of liver cancer.
The scientists are not sure why coffee might protect against the disease, but they hypothesized that certain compounds in the beverage could help to fight toxins. "Mechanisms that support a protective effect of coffee on liver cancer relate largely to studies in animals, although some human studies contribute to the evidence," the authors wrote. "Both coffee and coffee extracts have also been shown to reduce the expression of genes involved in inflammation, and the effects appear to be most pronounced in the liver.”
“However, there are still many unanswered questions around the findings on coffee for us to give definitive advice on this”, he said. But to lower your risk for developing liver cancer, limit your drinking to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women but if you drink three drinks, then at least have a cup of coffee to help mitigate the effects of the booze on your liver.
