Sleep deprivation linked to biological aging

According to new a study partial sleep deprivation is linked to biological aging in older adults. The findings are published in an online supplement of the journal Sleep.
In the study, the researchers gathered information of 29 adults aged between 61 years and 86 years over a four night period. They analyzed the quality of the sleep and took blood samples of the adults simultaneously to access gene expression. The final results showed that a single night of sleep troubles activated gene patterns consistent with faster aging.
Lead author Judith Carroll stated that the data support the hypothesis that one night of not getting sufficient sleep in older adults activates important biological pathways that promote biological aging.
