Cranberry juice could cut the risk of heart disease and diabetes

A new study revealed that drinking low-calorie cranberry juice cocktail may help lower the risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The study appeared in the journal Journal of Nutrition.
The researchers from US Department of Agriculture studied 56 participants to prove this. They were divided into 2 groups and One group drank about four-fifths of a pint of low-calorie cranberry juice a day, while the other drank a placebo with a similar colour and flavour. Then researchers took measurements of health indicators from the participants, including blood pressure, blood sugar levels and blood lipids.
After eight weeks, the researchers found that cranberry juice improved all those measures and the changes could be associated with a 15 per cent lower risk of a stroke and a 10 per cent lower risk of heart disease. "These findings suggest that polyphenols help to protect our bodies, and may be adept at keeping a large number of ailments at bay," Khoo said.
