CBFC CEO Rakesh Kumar Arrested

The Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has been in news recently for the corruption involved in certifying the films. Recently, a CBFC panel member and an agent were held accepting bribe allegedly on behalf of its CEO Rakesh Kumar. The latest development in this case is that CBI sleuths arrested Rakesh and produced him in a special court on Tuesday.
CBI told a special court that Kumar used to demand up to Rs. 25,000 for screening of a feature film within seven or eight days and up to Rs. 1.5 lakh for screening within three or four days instead of the routine 15 days. According to a senior police official, Kumar used to deny certification, if any producer or director approaches him through agents outside his coterie. The court remanded Kumar, in CBI custody until Friday. Reacting on this, Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar ordered that steps be taken to make the film certification process transparent.
